Week 5
Week 5: Quantitative design II (Survey)
Hi my blog's friends thank you for your visiting my blog. This is the week 5 of the assignment in the Professor Roger module. We can say that it is so far...so good, isn't it?
Today we will discuss about survey study design. These section contains three elements including the definition of survey study design, types, and strengths and limitations of each type. Let's go to explore them!!
Today we will discuss about survey study design. These section contains three elements including the definition of survey study design, types, and strengths and limitations of each type. Let's go to explore them!!
Survey study design
is used to describe the possibilities or the relationship of variables in large areas.
The 2 main types of the design
☝Cross-sectional study is a study on the current situation or event with huge target population where only ONE set of observations is collected for every unit in the study, at a certain point in time, disregarding the length of time of the study as a whole.
✌ Longitudinal study is a study on a long-term continuous event where TWO or MORE sets of observations are collected for every unit in the study, consists of
2.1 Trend study is a study of the state of things both present and past, compare sample surveys describing the same population at two or more points in time, study the change due to time. These samples consist of different cases. The results are used to determine future trends. Moreover, it is relatively easy to conduct and sampling is easy.
2.2 Cohort study is a long-term study. Follow-up is involved in order to allow monitoring of a certain population over a specified period of time. In addition, it is harder to conduct and quite vulnerable to attrition.
2.3 Panel is a continuous study, compare the same cases over time. There is a summary in each section before the next section. Moreover, it is very hard to conduct and very vulnerable to attrition.
Useful and Limitations of each study
Cross-sectional study
Useful:
- - It is relatively easy to conduct.
- - It will be undertaken in a short time and small samples.
- - It is relatively low cost.
- - It is easy accessible information
Limitations:
- - It is limited information obtained
Trend study
Useful:
- - It is very informative about trends.
- - We can describe net changes between time periods.
- - It determines future trends.
Limitations:
- - It is not informative about people.
- - Many time periods are better than few time periods.
- - Every trend analysis must start with two points in time and build from that to a longer series.
Cohort study
Useful:
- It is quite informative about trends.
- It is also quite informative about people.
- we can compare opinions in many time periods.
- We could compare some features for each time period.
- The time period can be defined in any way that is appropriate for our analysis.
Limitations:
- It takes more time to conduct.
Panel study
Useful:
- It is most informative about people.
- we can choose between alternatives
- Panel data allow us to go beyond describing net changes between time periods.
- Panel data allow us to describe the types of shifts that occur between time periods.
- We can also begin looking for factors that explain why some people change in one direction, while other individuals change in another direction, and still others do not change at all.
Limitations:
- It is least informative about trends.
- It is rare that all the cases are available in later time periods. This is called panel mortality.
- Reactivity because the respondents are reacting to the initial questioning.
- It takes longer time, and more budget.
